Shaping the future of carsharing

May 18-19, 2017

Day 1

An exciting, innovative future ahead

What is the future of carsharing as we move into a time of rapid change?

The conference’s opening discussion will start us off by exploring who will benefit as new players enter the field and what the impacts are of evolving technology and new mobility ecosystems…and the big debate of connected or autonomous vehicles. Our keynote speakers will bring an “outside view” from the public transport sector and the public interest perspective and our panel of operators will dive into the challenges and opportunities.

Key note by Mr Alain Flausch, UITP Secretary General

The urban mobility landscape is in transition:

New players are entering the mobility market and citizens are reconsidering their mobility options. Pushed by trends such as urban development, digitalization and decarbonisation the mobility market is changing. The arrival of driverless autonomous vehicles (AV) represents a unique opportunity as it could lead to creating healthier, more competitive and greener cities but only if they are employed as shared “Robo-Taxis” and mini-buses as well as used to reduce car ownership through more effective carsharing schemes.

Recent studies have shown that it would be possible to take every citizen to their destination with at least 80% fewer cars! BUT – this will only happen if AV’s are introduced in fleets of driverless shared autonomous vehicles of different sizes reinforcing an efficient high capacity public transport network supporting walking and cycling. What do these changes mean for the carsharing sector? How will it blur the lines between different types of services and re-shuffle the roles of involved stakeholders?
